Photos

I primarily shoot with either a Canon 6D Mark II (digital) or a Pentax MX (35mm film). Please see individual photo pages for image licenses. If you are interested in prints of any of the film images then please get in touch.

Nov 2023

  1. This image was taken on the North bank of the Thames in West London. It looks South across the river. The tide is out and the pebbled bank of the river runs down to the waters edge. Trees line the opposite bank silhouetted against the evening sky. Clouds in the sky are pink with the final rays of the sun.
  2. This is an image of two halves. The scene is a street corner in West London, the top half of the image is unfiltered, a bright blue sky with the occasional fluffy white cloud. The lower half of the image is shot through yellow tinted glasses. The sky is almost green, a strong yellow tint giving a sense of warmth.

The brushes hang vertically in a brush holder, the tubes of ink scattered in a small box on the desk. The painting shows a flower, leaves similar to bamboo.   5. A grainy black and white photo of river in the south of Beijing. The right bank is lined with reeds and trees. On the left bank, people sit on the edge of a path fishing. The presence of pond weed on the surface indicates the river is barely flowing. Developed in Ilfosol 3 (1+9).
  6. A grainy black and white photo of parents standing around outside a school gate in Beijing. They stand facing the school gates, their backs to the camera, waiting. Developed in Ilfosol 3 (1+9).
  7. A grainy black and white photo of a grandfather and grandson sharing a moment together. The grandfather is seated and holding a phone. The grandson stands on his left looking over his shoulder at the phone, his arm around the chair. They are sat at a round dining table. Developed in Ilfosol 3 (1+9).
  8. A black and white photo of the kitchen. This image was captured in Beijing in the height of summer. Two people stand next to each other looking at something on the counter in front of them. The clock on the wall shows that it is 9:24am. The image is a scan of a negative developed at home in Ilfosol3 (1+9).
  9. A grainy photo of some flowers. I took this photo as the opening photo on a new roll of film. After two failed attempts at development, I was keen to shoot simple scenes that I wouldn't miss should development fail for a third time. Developed in Ilfosol 3 (1+9).
  10. A black and white photo showing two people sat at a desk looking at a laptop screen. The older man points to something on the screen while a younger boy uses the trackpad. On the desk next to them are an SD card and two Raspberry Pi computers. The main light comes from a window behind them.

Sep 2023

  1. A black and white photo of a level crossing with barriers down across the road. A train coming from left to right across the image has just entered the crossing. On the far side of the tracks, brick building line the railway. On the near side, a bike rests against the warning lights.
  2. A black and white photo of someone holding a pencil writing Chinese characters in a notebook. The photo is cropped so that we only get to see the hands of the person. The characters visible are, 明尖兄弟哥.

Aug 2023

  1. A black and white photo of an empty room. Discarded cupboards and an upturned chair litter the sandy floor. Light comes from behind the camera but isn't bright enough to penetrate a darkened doorway opposite. The bare walls show no indication as to whether this room has been lived in.
  2. A black and white photo of spider clining to its web. The spider is seen side on, head towards the floor. The background in left half of the photo is significantly darker than the right, a shallow depth of field blurring out all detail behind the spider.
  3. A black and white photo showing people at work in a cornfield. The field is divided up into sections, with furrows running from top left to bottom right in the photo. In the foreground, two people rake the ground. An electricity pole stands tall in the middle of the field with wires stretching towards all four corners. In the distance, you can see the mountain ranges of northern Beijing.
  4. A black and white photo showing a man driving a three wheel flatbed truck. The vehicle has no cab and a half height windsheild. The man is looking straight ahead. Behind him a brick wall lines the road. Between the bars on the bed of the truck the face of a second person can be seen looking forwards along the road.

  6. A black and white photo of the Great Wall of China. The wall starts in the lower centre of the frame and heads up the mountain side into the distance. There are two watchtowers or turrets visible in the photo. You can just make out a few people climbing the steeper sections of the wall.
  7. A black and white photo of our hotel courtyard taken through the bedroom window. Thin curtains hang infront of the window providing a translucent wave effect to the image. In the courtyard outside a chair can be seen. On the opposite courtyard the sunlight accents a brick wall.
  8. A black and white photo of an underground car park. The left half of the image is lit by artificial lights in the ceiling. The right half of the image is in darkness. No cars are parked in the parking bays. An arrow on the ground points towards the viewer.
  9. A black and white photo of the subway station in Tianjing (天京), China. The station is empty save for three people making their way across the hall with their lugguage. The bright ceiling lights reflect in the polished floor.

A man on an electric scooter looks purposfully at the camera as he enters the crossing. On the far side of the street, a curved glass building rises up to the top of the frame.

The stadium has been turned into a public square and people can be seen sitting on steps that run round the inside of the stadium. Around the outer edge of what looks like a running track, an arched covering provides shade from the heat. The stadium feels like it was once a hive of activity, today it feels as if there is something missing.
  16. A black and white photo looking in to the front garden of a private residence in Tianjing (天京), China. The property looks run down, bushes overgrown and one of the iron gates has fallen to the ground and just left where it fell.

Jul 2023

  1. A black and white photo of a concrete sports stadium. The photo looks up towards the roof, the concrete benches visible in the foreground. As you move up the image you see a balcony before moving up towards the second tier. The first tier is over-exposed, washed out by the bright sun. The second tier of seating is much darker, shaded by the concrete roof of the stadium.

May 2023

  1. A black and white photo showing a tent in an urban garden. The door to the tent is wide open. In front of the entrance, a cooking stove can be seen with steam coming off the pan.

Apr 2023

  1. A black and white photo showing two people reviewing a sketch on a children's erasable sketch tablet. A boy faces away from the camera holding the "megasketcher" up to his uncle. The sketch shows a train, with three train cariages. Underneath it, the word "timetable". The first train arives in 22 minutes and is the fast train to Richmond.
  2. Two men sit at a table smiling but they are not looking at each other. They are both looking down towards their phones. This moment of shared joy was a connection brought about through technology, translation software allowing two people to exchange ideas and experiences despite a language barrier.
  3. A black and white photo showing two people playing chess. A boy, closest tot he camera, plays black. His grandfather plays white. The grandfather, the least experienced of the two, is smiling as if he has just seen something.
